BARNUM IN EUROPE WITHOUT THE SPARKLE

MILAN - The last time Ringling bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus came in Europe was in 1963. The Circus was chased by the major european enterprises. The newly founded Circo Americano in Italy, the mastodontic Krone, Sarrasani e Williams in Germany, the Bougliones in France. What was supposed to be a triumph (and financial success) for the american company, became a tour that had to be cut short to avoid a major collapse.

No wonder if we had to wait 46 years for a come back!

I managed to get and see this fantastic and friendly run circus at their last venue of the season. It may have been that they were close to home, or they wanted to go out with a bang, but their show was absolutely brilliant. I saw them for the first time at the start of the year and I am really happy that I managed to make them the last one of the year. The audience filled the place, with not just families with young children, but couples of all ages aswell. There was a great atmosphere with ...

Jay Millers Circus - Haslemere, Surrey - 19 September 2009

The show: I missed this show last year and how I missed it! Again, Jay Millers has come up trumps with a truly fantastic value show. In fact, this year if there had to be one word to describe it, I think it would have to be "Sexy"! Nearly every act featured attractive semi clad females or males in fantastic presentations. Presented by Ringmistress Natalie, it also featured the superb clowning of Peppi who is a very ...

I've just been sent a link to this Christmas attraction.

Full details, including "Zippo's Christmas Circus" are at http://www.hydeparkwinterwonderland.com/attractions.html

I help run a London club for singles & so far have taken them to Zippo's several times, Chinese State & Moscow State circuses as well as Circus OZ etc.

So it looks like we'll be going again this year. However, as I often see more than one performance, I would also go with the CFA as well.

A REVIEW fri 4, fri 11

On friday the 11 of september I had a ring side seat. 3 girls in their mid twenties with 3 huge pink candyflosses in their hands set down next to me. One of them said:- I come to the circus to get a candyfloss!!!-

Indeed, the venue wasn't packed, but the fragrance of candyfloss, popcorn and hotdogs was invading the big top. And that what's all about traditional circuses!

So, who decided that a traditional circus should have a storyline? Why Rasputin and why a story ...

The Circus so far this year I would recommend is John Lawson's Circus. I think it is Surrey way at the moment now but whilst it was in Sussex I saw it a few times and is a packed two hour show with all top acts and excellent clowning from the Poppolinos. At only £7 a ticket it has to be the best value too.

Oh! What a Circus… Oh! What a show!

On Friday 21st August at 9pm, Zippos Circus put on an extra show… with a difference! It was a charity night for Sussex Beacon who are a charity for Aids sufferers and it was all very interesting and all VERY camp!

As the Circus was in Brighton (well, Hove actually!), what better chance than to put on this charity show. I have already reviewed Zippos show in the UK Circus reviews 2009 section on this website, so I wont go into much details ...

Frazer Watson asked me to post the following review which has already been on the ATFOTF forum. I hope it will be of interest.

- Stuart

It might sound a bit unusual to forum members that someone who is 50 this month has never been to the circus, but it's true.

When I was a kid back in the 60s/70s my family couldn't afford much and the main local entertainment was the ORIGINAL Pat Collins fun fair, which was based in Bloxwich where I still live, so trips to the circus weren't something ...

The show: The first act was something I haven't seen before - Swnging poles! Not just climbing poles as in the last show they presented, these ones actually swung side to side! Quite an awesome sight and recommended viewing from the grandstand! Other outstanding acts like the hat juggling, plate spinning, confortion, the return of the shaolin wu-shu warriors, lion dance, diablos, bicycle act, hoop diving etc. One of the most outstanding ...

The show: You never know what to expect with these possibly arty farty "festival" type Circuses. But this was actually "true" Circus through and through. Small, intimate and friendly, brought together well by an entertaining ringmaster with white face - it took you back more to victorian times than anything Cirque du soliel (thank goodness!).

Zippos Circus - Hove Lawns, Hove, East Sussex - 12 August 2009

The Show: There is a very clever theme to this years Zippos show. It begins with a look back to the early days of Circus talking of Astley etc and goes through to the current day and eventually a look at future Circus! A good take on an idea for a show this will always work well on. Due to this there are plenty of group acts where you get the dancers, some juggling, trapaze work altogether - everybody performs brilliantly and ...

The Show: This years Hippodrome show is titled “Celebrate” to literally do just that – celebrate 30 years since Peter Jay took over the show. And what a show and celebration it is! After a bit of comedy and warm up it begins with a short film showing news coverage and bits of acts from over the years – a great build up.

This is followed by a great comedy troupe act on the swing – jumping into a huge slide, hard to describe, but ...
